Over 50 Managers at James Watt College are to be presented with their Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) certificates at a ceremony in the college on Tuesday 31 March.
59 Managers from all of the college’s campuses, including Learning and Service Managers, have completed the IOSH Managing Safely course, a nationally recognised qualification. The staff will receive their certificates from Drew Duncan, Chair of the Board of Management.
Bill McNeice, Environmental Health and Safety Manager at James Watt College, said: “This is a great achievement for both the managers and the college as a whole. By training such a large number of managers on this course the college has raised awareness of health and safety in every area and has increased the profile within managers’ day to day working lives. No other college in Scotland has trained such a large number of managers to this level in such a short time.
“The four week course was adapted it to ensure all managers could attend without disrupting their work. Topics covered included risk assessment, the law and the legal system, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, stress, housekeeping and the working environment, working at height, manual handling, investigating accidents, performance indicators and environmental effects. By training managers in these areas we are ensuring that the highest standards of health and safety are adhered to throughout the college.”
The course is designed to get managers up to speed on the practical actions they must take to handle health and safety in their teams and to emphasise the importance of safe practice in the workplace. Managers also covered waste and pollution and discovered how they can get involved in cutting down environmental impacts.
