A Career In Nursing Or Primary Teaching Awaits You At James Watt College

James Watt College is holding two information days this month at its North Ayrshire Campus in Kilwinning for adults returning to education who are interested in a career in Primary Teaching or Nursing.

The Information Days will tell potential students about the Scottish Wider Access Programmes (SWAP) that are available at the college. Specifically designed for adults with few or no qualifications, these courses are a first step back into education and can guarantee students a place at college or university if successfully completed.

Anyone interested in becoming a primary teacher or going on to study at university should go along to the college on Tuesday 21st April at 2pm.
Potential students will be able to find out more about the Access to Primary Education and University programme. The course covers a diverse range of subjects including communications, psychology, art, history and science. Many students who have completed this course have now become primary school teachers or gone on to obtain degrees in a range of subjects.

Diane Mullen, Curriculum Manager, stated: “This programme attracts highly motivated learners who are looking for a confidence building, but challenging, course to assist them in developing the skills necessary for university education.”

Alternatively, potential students interested in pursuing a career in Adult or Mental Health Nursing should go along to the Kilwinning Campus on Wednesday 29th April from 10am-1pm.
Lecturers from James Watt College and the University of the West of Scotland will be on hand to answer questions about the Access to Nursing programme, a one year course which, upon completion, guarantees you a place on a nursing course at the University of the West of Scotland.

Diane added “Every student has the support of a guidance tutor throughout the year, and we offer top up classes in communications and numeracy. For anyone who has lost their job or hasn’t been in education since school these courses are the ideal way to get new qualifications and improve their prospects.

“Finance is a much bigger issue for mature students, so we will also discuss that on the day and offer advice on how to get funding for the courses.”
